Born to deaf parents, Sibel Kaya, a hearing child, navigated her quiet childhood using sign language. During her first visit to a park, Sibel noticed that other children communicated with their lips instead of their hands. This early experience helped her understand that barriers often arise from societal conditions. Initially, she was rejected from school because she could not speak. Although she began speaking at the age of nine, she did not achieve fluency until she was 13. However, she later experienced hearing loss due to an accident at home and has been using hearing aids since the age of 12.

Due to her parents hailing from different cities, Sibel is adept in various sign language accents. She studied graphic design at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts. Drawing from her life experiences, she founded Let's Sign (Hadi İşaret), a social initiative aimed at creating an accessible world for the deaf, hearing impaired, and anyone interested in learning sign language. Sibel saw a disparity between the Turkish Language Association’s Dictionary, which contains nearly 600,000 words, and the Turkish Sign Language Dictionary, which has only 2,000 signs. She concluded that this limits deaf individuals’ ability to communicate and live independently. Through Let’s Sign, she works to improve their Turkish literacy skills and raise awareness of the issue through social media engagement. Meanwhile, she collaborates with linguists to enrich the vocabulary of Turkish Sign Language and introduce new terms to the deaf community. She believes that these actions will help dismantle the communication barriers between the deaf community and those who can hear.

Through Let’s Sign, inspired by her own experiences and those of her family, she has reached nearly 20,000 people and contributed 230 new signs to Turkish Sign Language so far. Sibel Kaya continues to enhance the communication skills of the deaf and hearing impaired and enrich Turkish Sign Language.
