After earning her degree from Ankara University Faculty of Communication, Gülçin Cömert went back to her hometown of Bandırma to embark on her professional career. She worked for many years in the communication departments of different municipalities. In 1999, with the goal of preserving the region’s cultural heritage and illuminating the ancient city of Antandros, Gülçin led a team of volunteers to establish the Altınoluk Association for the Recovery, Conservation, and Sustention of Antandros Ancient City, commonly known as the Antandros Association.
With support from Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, Edremit Municipality, and other local stakeholders, the Association meets the needs of excavation teams, ensures the continuation of excavations in the region, promotes the area through awareness initiatives, and fosters the local community’s connection to the ancient city. Ongoing initiatives include advocating for the designation of the ancient city of Antandros as a protected archaeological site, providing scholarships to archaeology students, and raising awareness to encourage the formation of citizen groups dedicated to other ancient cities.
Gülçin also spearheads various initiatives, including archaeology workshops for children and teachers, participation in fairs to promote the region, and the creation of culturally authentic items to generate income for local women.
She has engaged nearly 4,000 children in archaeology and has highlighted thousands of ancient cities and the local culture through her initiatives. Under the leadership of Gülçin Cömert, the Antandros Association continues to preserve cultural heritage by focusing on unearthing the ancient city of Antandros, promoting the region as a tourist destination, and fostering community involvement by encouraging locals to take ownership of these historical areas.
