Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sarı Protects the Environment and Promotes Economic Development in Lake Van
On 25 October 2009 Sabancı Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" program hosts Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sarı from the eastern province of Van. For 17 years Dr. Sarı has been working on preserving fish living in Lake Van (circumference of 400 kilometers) and developing methods to prevent illegal fishing which has almost led to the extinction of a certain species of fish.
Through Mustafa Sarı's efforts, illegal fishing has dropped from 12 to 2 tons per year over the past 13 years. Consequently the fish industry has grown, sustaining a livelihood for hundreds of families that make a living from Lake Van's resources.
